Hackney fulfilled its reputation as ‘Tech City’ during this years London Tech Week by hosting a series of events showcasing the future for the borough’s residents and businesses.
The Council, which has championed and supported local tech enterprises for many years, programmed a series of events covering digital apprenticeships, a tech recruitment day for residents, the power of tech in supporting businesses to trade globally and selling digital services to local government.
Highlights included the London Office of Technology and Innovation (LOTI) Digital Apprenticeship Programme Workshop. This was attended by the fifteen founding boroughs of LOTI who were all there to collaborate on supporting the development of digital skills across London’s diverse communities.
Cllr Carole Williams, Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills and Human Resources, who opened the workshop on 11 June said: “I am delighted that Hackney Council, a founding member of LOTI, is leading on this strand of work for the partnership and that we are able to share our knowledge and success in creating apprenticeships for residents. We’ve recruited 21 digital apprentices within the Council since September and we will continue this further so residents who have been unable to get a job since leaving education or those who might require additional support, can develop the skills to start a career within the borough’s tech industries”.
The borough also hosted the ‘Be Local. Act Global’ conference. The conference, developed in partnership with Here East, Plexal and Capital Factory from Austin in Texas, highlighted the opportunities available for local small businesses to trade world wide without moving out of the borough. Guest speakers from across the world encouraged Hackney’s business community to explore international opportunities, and included the Deputy Mayor of Chicago, Andrea Zopp and Siw Anderson, Director of Oslo Business Region.
London Tech Week is an annual celebration of live events across London showcasing and celebrating the best of tech with networking, social, learning and business opportunities produced by the Informa Tech Division with London & Partners and Tech London Advocates.
