Community

At Invest in Hackney we believe that it's the boroughs diversity, pride and undeniable sense of community that has made it one of London's most desirable places to live and work.

Hackney is a place where residents, businesses and community groups support each other and achieve together. Below are just some of the exceptional projects taking place in the borough that you can support:

The Speaker of Hackney's Charities

Councillor Soraya Adejare was sworn in as the Speaker of Hackney for the municipal year 2017 to 2018. The role of the Speaker is on a par with that of the duties undertaken by the Mayor in other boroughs in that she is the apolitical, civic representative of the borough, fulfilling both ceremonial and public duties.

Having grown up in Hackney and whilst being proud of it's evolution over the past 15 years, she is also acutely aware of the fact that some of Hackney's young people face increasingly complex challenges, challenges which in their construct are constantly shifting making it harder for them to navigate the world. Councillor Adejare has a background in youth work and advocacy experiences which brought her intense understanding of the difficulties many of the boroughs young people face across all social strata and which are often trivialised or misunderstood.

During her term in office, Councilor Adejare will be supporting the work of three Hackney based charities, each of which provide specialised services designed to better the outcomes and opportunities for residents. They are also reliant on sourcing funds from ever decreasing avenues and face increasing problems in terms of project longevity.

SKYWAY

Skyway's work focuses on vulnerable and disadvantaged groups across the borough and has been a leader in supporting them to address and overcome the challenges they face. This includes working with children facing social and educational problems as well as those at risk of offending. There is a focus on providing the means for young people to develop the skills necessary to take them into the wider world as well as contributing back into the community.

ACCESS TO SPORT

Access to Sport travels across the borough providing sporting and development opportunities for young residents inclusive of access to activities many would not otherwise be able to participate in.They primarily work on our estates and open spaces and the organisation is a key player in terms of providing employment opportunities, diversionary activities and supporting the aspirations of Hackney's athletes.

OFF CENTRE

Off Centre is a charity whose services are oversubscribed. Its work is focused on the mental wellbeing of our younger residents by way of offering counselling, therapy, advocacy, advice and psychosocial services. The work of the organisation is all encompassing, supporting areas such as depression, abuse, violence and self harm as well as sexual and gender identity.

Throughout the year Councillor Adejare will host several events and activities to raise funds for the charities listed above, these will range from gala dinners, boat trips and even sponsored free fall abseiling!

"I appreciate that all of us are having to do a bit of belt tightening but it is my sincerest hope that you will give consideration to supporting forthcoming endeavours, whether it be purchasing a ticket or sponsoring an event, donating an item for a raffle or participating yourself, support of any kind would be greatly appreciated"
